EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Mediation Video Guide <04mit.pdf> (212 KB) [04 MVG] view. The Peer Mediation segment of the video, Alternatives to Violence: Conflict Resolution, Negotiation, and Mediation, Tape II (12.5 minutes view screen shot)) is shown to the MITs to give them an excellent model to follow in their work ahead. (Here's the source URL as of July 2007: <http://teacherstore.discovery.com//> Do a site search for Alternatives to Violence to find its listing. Phone: 1-877-900-8830. [Product# 782623] We use the Grade 7-12 version.) At this point, we simply watch the video to see great mediators at work. Watch the video the first time w/o having MITs complete the questions and then return to watch it a second time at the end of training at which point the completion of this page becomes a good CFU. An additional benefit would be for mediators to view it as part of mediator review sessions during the coming year. This is the best video segment that we've seen on mediation as we teach it.

The mediation segment of the video, Alternatives to Violence, Part II (12.5 min.) is the central focus of this exercise. The video segment (screen shot) is diverse as to gender and ethnicity and involves high school-aged students. It is shown as a fine model for the MITs to follow as they picture themselves as mediators. Show it this first time through with just a brief introduction. The introduction should state that this is a good example of what you as mediators will be doing here at this school this coming year. This is peer mediation. "Peer" meaning that students help other students to find their own solutions to their conflicts. Sit back, put yourself in the role of these student mediators. They are excellent role models of what you can become by working hard with us today. This is what a real school mediation (like ours) looks like. Notice how natural it seems to them!

At the day's conclusion, we will view the video again, pausing along the way, for the MITs to try to answer as many questions on MVG (this workbook page) as they can having completed their initial exposure to, and training in, mediation. This is also really a CFU gauge for presenters to see where we are as an MIT group in our knowledge of mediation. If possible, do an item analysis of this form once it's completed and corrected by the MITs. It's not an evaluation of them. Have them correct their own papers and then see if, and where, this day of training needs to be extended next, such as the follow up meetings this coming semester, etc. It is, then, really our evaluation to be used to set up our program follow up goals.

We (MarJon) would certainly like to know where we need to improve our mediation information site for presenters so that we can set about doing just that. Your "scores" on MVG and comments will be appreciated via email. Thanks.
